As you gear up for your engagement photos, the number one question my couples ask is, “But what should I wear??” When it comes to your engagement photos, it’s not just about looking good; it’s about feeling good, too! I’ve created this guide to help you pick outfits to make your engagement session stress-free!
The backdrop of your photoshoot plays a massive role in your outfit choice. For instance, if your session is at a beach, light fabrics and pastel colors might complement the sand and the water. While shooting in the city, you might consider a more sophisticated look to match the surroundings. Remember, the setting should complement your outfit, creating a cohesive look for your photos. When selecting an outfit based on the location, consider whether you would wear that outfit to that location even if you weren’t taking pictures. If the answer is no, I would suggest looking at your other options.
I can’t stress this enough! Choose comfortable outfits! I will probably have you moving, running, or even sitting down during your engagement photos. If you feel squeezed in your outfit or if it feels stiff, you’re most likely going to be uncomfortable, and that shows in your photos. But just because your outfit is comfortable doesn’t mean it is boring. Being comfortable in what you’re wearing means feeling like yourself and being able to move and dance throughout your engagement session.
While bold prints and loud colors can be fun, they might be distracting when looking at the photo. I always tell my clients to wear outfits with subtle patterns or solid colors. Classic stripes, small polka dots, or a small floral print can work well without overwhelming the shot. Also, avoid colors that might reflect onto your skin, like bright reds, hot pinks, oranges, especially in sunny outdoor settings. Think about the colors of your engagement session location. If you’re in a park with lots of greens, don’t wear a green dress or a green shirt; we wouldn’t want you blending into the background.
Your shoes should be both stylish and practical. High heels in the grass? It may not be the best idea. Engagement session in a field with tall grass? Consider a closed-toe shoe or boot. And barefoot is always a great idea if you’re on the beach!
For casual, relaxed vibes, jeans and a cute neutral top never fail. Wearing colors that compliment your skin tone is always a good idea! Make sure your legs are protected if you are walking in tall grasses. Consider wearing long pants or even a long-sleeved top that you can use as a layer, putting it on and taking it off throughout the night. One of my favorite places to shop for casual engagement photo outfits is Abercrombie.
You can’t go wrong with a classic white dress or a nice shirt and slacks for a more formal look. My couples always have fun dressing up like they are having a date night together since that’s basically what an engagement session with me is! The white dress look is always a safe option, letting everyone know you are the bride-to-be. A great place to find a Sunday best engagement outfits is J.Crew.
Those looking to make a statement with their engagement pictures should go all out with an elegant dress and a full suit and tie for the groom. Think of the dress you’d wear to your rehearsal dinner; this would be the vibe you’d look for when selecting a dress. A good option for shopping formal outfits for your engagement session is Lulus.
Remember, the most important thing is that you feel like yourself. You’ll look back on these photos forever, remembering how happy you were in that stage of life, so wear what makes you feel comfortable and beautiful. Whether it’s jeans or a dress, you should feel like yourself in whichever outfit you choose! Want to see more looks from previous engagement sessions?
